The challenge of this project was not only that it would contain a variety of uses (garage, music studio, 2 bedroom apartment attached to an existing house), but that it would change use over time, with the apartment becoming the bedroom area for the entire house. Circulation became a key point in examining how to make the project work. The circulation had to be separative for the apartment, while remaining connective when the apartment becomes the bedroom suite. This was solved with a central stair tower that gathers and directs people. An entrance off the street and garage, separate levels for the apartment and existing house, and a back door for access to the yard. This provides access to all aspects of the project that need connecting, while still providing a certain level of privacy between the existing house and addition.
